The primary exploration target for the well was to prove petroleum in Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks (the Garn and Ile formations). The secondary exploration target was to prove petroleum in reservoir rocks in Lower Cretaceous (the Lange formation).
Aquiferous reservoirs with gross vertical thicknesses of 118 and 123 metres, respectively, were encountered in the Garn and Ile formations with reservoir quality as expected. Gas/condensate was proven in three thin sandstone intervals with a total net vertical thickness of 9 metres in the Lange formation, and with a gross reservoir thickness of 52 metres. Preliminary calculations of the size of the discovery are between 3 and 20 million Sm3 recoverable oil equivalents. The licensees will consider the discovery together with nearby discoveries.
The well was not formation tested, but data has been acquired and samples have been taken. This is the first exploration well in production licence 475
. The licence was awarded on 29 February 2008 (APA 2007).
The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 4050 metres and a total measured depth of 4250 metres below the sea surface. It was terminated in the Ror formation from the Lower Jurassic Age. Water depth is 291 metres. The well has been permanently plugged and abandoned.
Well 6407/1-6 S was drilled by the Transocean Arctic drilling facility, which will now proceed to production licence 418 in the northern part of the North Sea to drill appraisal well 35/9-8, where Wintershall Norge AS is the operator.
