Focus on German-Norwegian energy relationsMario Mehren meets Norway’s Oil and Energy Minister in Berlin / Securing Europe’s energy supplies with oil and gas from the North Sea

Berlin. Germany and Norway have a strong partnership – but what influence will the new general elections for both governments in September and the resurgence in protectionism have on the (energy) relations between the two countries? Wintershall CEO Mario Mehren and Norway’s Oil and Energy Minister, Terje Søviknes, addressed these and other questions at two events in Berlin.

In addition to the Norwegian Minister and Mario Mehren, members of the Bundestag and ministry representatives also participated in a parliamentary breakfast held at the German Parliamentary Association (DPG) to discuss the German-Norwegian partnership.

Afterwards, a press conference with selected energy journalists took place in the Berlin offices of Zukunft ERDGAS, the German natural gas initiative. The core issue was the energy relations between Germany and Norway.

For Mario Mehren, the close partnership with the Norwegian partners is essential for the collaboration: "Norway is one of the most important energy partners for the EU and Germany. In 2016, every third cubic meter of natural gas imported to Germany was ‘made in Norway’”. As one of the most important license holders and players in Norway, Wintershall makes a major contribution by planning and investing in the long term.

Minister Søviknes praised the German-Norwegian partnership: “We will continue to be a good partner for Germany in the decades to come.”

The North Sea will also play a key role in future energy supplies: about 50 percent of the natural gas needed to supply the EU and its 500 million inhabitants is currently produced in the North Sea and its neighboring countries.
