Risk Management on Brage and VegaWintershall presents cases at the Risk Management Conference
Wintershall Norge’s smooth takeover of operatorship of the Brage platform from Statoil in 2013 involved a process of effective risk management. The approach used by Wintershall and Statoil on Brage and the ongoing takeover of the subsea Vega field were presented at the Risk Management conference at the Sola Stand Hotel in Stavanger on February 3-4.
Mike Pollard, Wintershall Norge Discipline Lead for Drilling and Completion, presented the case studies to a cross disciplinary audience of risk experts. In his presentation, he argued that strategies such as checklist verifications and extensive internal and external audits, allowed Wintershall to mitigate acute risks to the Brage takeover such as IT incompatibility and document transfer delays.
“We were extremely thorough with our risk management. We created a comprehensive risk picture that was updated regularly throughout the process, and continued to assess and mitigate those risks as the project went on. On Brage, we had a year to complete the takeover. On Vega, the timeline is only six months. So we have had to learn important lessons,” he said.
Vidar Kristensen, Wintershall Norge Manager for Quality and Risk Management, was on the steering committee of the conference.
“Risk management has always been a key part of the way we operate on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. As a new operator, it has become even more important that Wintershall incorporates it into our daily business in everything we do. However, risk management is an area of constant change and improvement. This conference has given insight into how others approach it and has been a good opportunity for us to continue to learn and improve,” he said.
Pollard’s presentation, Managing Risk when taking over operatorships on Brage and Vega, was part of a two day conference programme that included presentations from operators, service companies, consultants and academics.
Wintershall Norge was the main partner of the conference.
