New stage in Maria-project: Templates completed ahead of installation in the Norwegian SeaWintershall’s flagship development reaches major landmark/ Templates to be installed within weeks
The two giant subsea templates for the Maria field – Wintershall’s first operated development in Norway have been completed and prepared for installation. Within weeks, the 285 tonne templates, each the size of a basketball court, will sail from Kristiansund in mid-Norway before being lowered onto the seabed on the Halten Terrace in the Norwegian Sea.
Touring the structures with the Mayor of Kristiansund Kjell Neergard, Martin Bachmann, Wintershall Head of Exploration & Production Europe and Middle East, said: “Through clever engineering and efficient project management, Wintershall is developing a subsea field that is both cost effective and has the potential to prolong the lifetime of other fields in the area. We believe that developing the project in this way will maximize returns for Wintershall, our partners, and the whole Norwegian society.”
The concept for the Maria-field is to connect the reservoir to the already existing, closely located infrastructure via a subsea tieback - making the project smart and efficient in challenging times. Under the approved development solution, the reservoir will be linked via a subsea tieback to the Kristin, Heidrun and Åsgard B production platforms.
Maria is the first development that Wintershall will bring from exploration to production in Norway and demonstrates Wintershall’s long-term commitment to Norway.
Hugo Dijkgraaf, Project Director, stressed the importance of delivering on time and to budget. “Operational excellence is key. We have an obligation to deliver on our promises and ensure that our investments are sustainable. Wintershall rightly has a keen focus on optimizing our activities in the Norwegian Continental Shelf. It is only by maintaining this attitude that we can be sustainably successful,” he said.
Next week, the first template will be lifted onto the vessel Normand Oceanic, and will travel approximately 210 km north to be installed on the Halten Terrace in the Norwegian Sea. After one week the vessel will return and pick up the second template for installation. The planned production startup for Maria is in 2018.
