Our Business A leading operator on the shelf
Wintershall Norge is a company specializing in the exploration, development and production of oil and gas. We are one of the leading operators on the Norwegian Continental Shelf with strong expertise in exploration, drilling, field development, production operations, and business development.
Wintershall Norge has an excellent exploration track record that is the cornerstone of the success of its Norwegian business. We have around 50 licenses in some of the most productive areas of the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
Success is never certain in exploration, but the passion and knowledge of our geologists and geophysicists combined with the use of advanced technologies give us the greatest chance of striking oil or gas.
Focus on exploration
Drilling is the only way of finding something, but before we commit ourselves we ensure we take into account all knowledge and information to help increase the odds. Our scientists review the seismic and other data and determine if a prospect is worth going for.
At Wintershall Norge we make things happen and we continually try to improve our discovery rate. Over half of Wintershall’s worldwide exploration budget comes to the Norway asset. We are the main growth area for Wintershall.
Development The next phase in the Wintershall Norge adventure
Wintershall Norge’s expansion on the Norwegian Continental Shelf has already begun with the focus on the development of our own operated fields. Successful exploration and investment in development projects will require competent engineers, scientists and support staff to reach our production goals.
To develop fields into production requires multi-skilled staff. In house expertise covers exploration, detailed geology interpretation and modelling, reservoir engineering, facilities definition, drilling engineering and execution and project delivery. We have recruited skilled personnel who have the ability to contribute to development decisions and planning of successful field developments. Cooperation with license partners and authorities is of great importance in this work.
Drilling & Wells Supporting our goals
Wintershall Norge’s drilling and wells operation has been crucial in our journey to become a leading operator on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The technology and skills in the department underpin the work done by our exploration, development and production teams.
We believe in making things happen by maintaining the skills necessary for the planning and execution of complex and expensive drilling operations, forging a productive and fair relationship with all our partners and suppliers, and maintaining an uncompromising attitude to HSE.
Working on the Norwegian Continental Shelf means our people can be working amongst some of the most challenging environments anywhere in the world. We are uncompromising in our commitment to their health and safety.
We also recognise our responsibility in maintaining the delicate environmental conditions and work hard to minimise our environmental impact.
The most important thing to the company is the safety of the people linked up to our operations. Every day the first thing we think of is how to ensure their well-being.
Ellen Braune, Head of Drilling & Wells
Wintershall Norge is one of the leading operators on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS).
In 2015 we took the next step on by taking over operatorship of our first subsea field Vega. Alongside the Brage platform we now operate two producing fields.
Our daily production is now 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent (boe) putting us amongst the major producers in Norway, and during the second half of the decade we will begin production from our own operated developments.
We are also strongly committed to developing the NCS for the long term. To meet our goals we are prepared to invest in development projects to ensure production and infrastructure which could be in operation for decades.
The Business Development & Commercial unit is responsible for commercial advice as well as strategic development and business development. Business development includes acquiring and divesting assets to optimise the portfolio. In all we do, the focus is on creating value in all phases of the energy cycle, from exploration and development, through to production.
Since Wintershall established itself in Norway in 2006, we have sought mergers and acquisitions which will help us reach our goal of becoming one of the leading operators on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
We work closely with the asset managers to establish the optimal commercial framework for each asset. We develop the strategy in close cooperation with the rest of the organisation.
LICENSE PORTFOLIO & PARTNERSHIP
This is an exciting time for Wintershall Norge. We are working hard with our partners in the industry to develop the company as a leading operator on the shelf and continue to create value for ourselves and the Norwegian society.

Technology To be a leading operator we need the best technology
Wintershall Norge invests in the best technology to ensure the cleanest and most efficient production of oil and gas. We have forged close relationships with Norway’s top technology universities and research institutes, in Stavanger and Trondheim; working closely with them to improve oil and gas recovery and drive efficiencies across the whole operation.
We are also working closely with other leading companies on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, through the governing body, the Norwegian Oil and Gas Association, playing our part as a responsible operator in making industry-wide improvements. More than half of Wintershall’s research and development (R&D) budget is being invested in Norway, helping us to be creative, open, responsible and entrepreneurial.
In the last decade we have had several successful exploration projects. By using state of the art computer imaging technology we ensure continuous improvement. We invest in the best tried and tested drilling technology for the most efficient offshore operations.
Procurement A close relationship
Wintershall Norge’s procurement team adds value through compliant procurement processes and competitive tendering. The tendering process is based on transparency and equal treatment of suppliers. We use the Joint Qualification System (EPIM JQS from 1 October 2018) in the first selection of tenderers. Our suppliers’ contribution to the business represents a significant value. The relationship between Wintershall and the suppliers is therefore important, and we would like to be viewed as a preferred customer.
Our suppliers represent 95% of our offshore deliveries. It is therefore important for us to choose the right suppliers.
